About the Chair of Ancient Philosophy (Prof. Dr. Christof Rapp)
This chair teaches and researches the philosophy of Greco-Roman antiquity. The focus is on so-called "classical" Greek philosophy (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle) together with the philosophy of the pre-Socratics and Hellenistic philosophy (especially the Stoics and Epicurus). Numerous research projects and seminars at this chair relate to the philosopher Aristotle and the impact of Aristotelian philosophy up to the present day.
Thematically, the focus is on questions of metaphysics and ancient natural philosophy (including philosophical psychology). In addition, the staff of the chair conduct research on questions of ancient ethics, moral psychology, political theory, theory of action, logic and theory of argumentation.
At the Chair of Ancient Philosophy, we practice a philosophical as well as philological-historical approach to ancient sources. The texts of ancient philosophy are not only regarded as cultural testimonies of a past epoch, but are reconstructed in such a way that their possible contribution to philosophical questions of the present becomes clear.
