I understand philosophy first and foremost as a critical undertaking. Accordingly, I see it as philosophy's task to take the phenomena of the present day seriously and make them the subject of philosophical analysis. Following the tradition of philosophical pragmatism, this task always has a practical element and possesses a transformative impetus. In this way, dealing with socially relevant topics as well as interacting beyond academic circles are central to my work.

In regard to research in the philosophy of religion, for me this means that research should not be limited to a project of (Christian) apologetics, but can instead create many more opportunities for reflection on the challenges of a pluralist society, which have a relevance beyond a specifically religious context. As part of the Guardini visiting professorship, one of my tasks is therefore to pursue the critical and transformative potential of contemporary philosophy of religion and to make this visible, also in the sense of public philosophy. Present crises, in particular, will serve as the starting point for this, and philosophy of religion, with its array of instruments, can make a significant contribution towards understanding and overcoming them.
