Born 1947 in Paris. From 1967 student at the École Normale Supérieure (Ulm). Agrégation de philosophie in 1971. Received PhD in 1976. Habilitation in 1986. 1972-1976 secondary school teacher. 1976-1988 Director of Research at CNRS. 1986-1987 Humboldt Foundation scholar in Cologne. 1989-1990 Professor at the University of Dijon. 1990-2010 Professor at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University. 2002-2012 Professor at LMU (Guardini Chair).
Visiting Professor at Penn State, Boston University, Boston College, Universidad de Navarra (Pamplona), Università San Rafaele (Milan), Trinity College (Dublin).
