A Critical Edition of Carnap's Aufbau
Abstract:
In the ongoing project Rudolf Carnap Digital (RCD), one of our first tasks will be the development of what we call a critical edition of Carnap’s Aufbau. After briefly describing the aims of RCD, I will first examine the difference a critical edition can make in comparison with the currently available edition, which is still essentially a reproduction of the first edition from 1928. A critical edition, for example, provides additional material on the development of the book, as well as annotations and an extended introduction. Second, I will outline the introduction I intend to write, indicating what can be said about the overall significance and scope of the work, its historical background, and its reception—first in Europe and later in the United States.
