Rudolf Carnap Digital (2026 - 2050)

This project, funded by the Union of the Academies and supported by the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, aims to publish a comprehensive edition of the published and unpublished works of Rudolf Carnap in both digital and printed form.

Abstract: Rudolf Carnap Digital (RCD)

Rudolf Carnap (1891–1970) is widely regarded as one of the most important philosophers of the twentieth century. This project undertakes the first comprehensive edition of his complete works. In addition to documenting the writings published during his lifetime, it will edit and publish a substantial body of previously inaccessible material, including Carnap’s diaries, his private and scientific correspondence, and unpublished manuscripts. On this basis, the project will also produce the first comprehensive intellectual biography of Carnap. At the core of the project is a digital edition, developed using the archive and editorial management tool VALEP. From this digital foundation, two printed editions will be derived: a bilingual reader’s edition, The Collected Works of Rudolf Carnap (Oxford University Press), and a Critical Edition that presents the original texts only (i.e., without translations) and includes both Carnap’s published works and key materials from the Nachlass.
