About the Chair of Metaphysics (Prof. Dr. Alyssa Ney)
The Chair of Metaphysics (Prof. Dr. Alyssa Ney) investigates metaphysical topics from an analytical perspective, aiming for an approach that is scientifically based, historically informed, and socially engaged.
The research in the Chair is currently focused on the nature of reality as described by our most fundamental scientific theories, what it means to say a scientific or philosophical theory is fundamental, the historical interaction between scientific and metaphysical accounts of fundamental reality, and the social importance of uncovering fundamental truths.
The Chair offers teaching across a range of topics in analytic metaphysics. Students may take courses in the history of metaphysics (and its interaction with science) from ancient Greece through the early modern period and into the twenty-first century. The Chair also offers many courses in contemporary analytic metaphysics, as well as in the metaphysics of science.
The research and teaching in the Chair of Metaphysics is complemented by a lecture series that convenes on Wednesday afternoons, as well as regular workshops that discuss cutting-edge topics on both historical and contemporary themes in metaphysics.
