Meng Xu

I am a visiting PhD student at LMU hosted by Prof. Monika Betzler from September 2026 to August 2027 (funded by China Scholarship Council). Currently, I am a PhD student in the School of Philosophy at Wuhan University supervised by Prof. Jianhua Li. Previously, I completed an MA in Philosophy at Wuhan University (2021-2024) and a BA in Public Finance at Jilin University (2017-2021).

My research interests primarily lie in normative ethics and social philosophy. In my doctoral thesis, I will demonstrate a critical investigation based on Axel Honneth’s theory and analyze his strategies for grounding normative foundations for recognition. Then I will argue it that his strategies were failed. To overcome this failure, I will reconstruct normative foundations of recognition by developing a self-constitution model, which introduces Christine Korsgaard’s theories of normativity (practical identity) and re-interpretates the concept of intersubjectivity. Thus this work will bring together areas of generally normative theories, critical theory and phenomenology.
