Aesthetic Testimony in Science (2023 - 2024)

Abstract

It is well-recognised that science relies on testimony. In recent years, there has been increased interest in the role of aesthetic values in science which has showcased how the aesthetic is closely intertwined with the epistemic aims of science. And so, we might also think that science relies on aesthetic testimony. Yet, since at least Kant’s Critique of Judgement, philosophers of art have argued that we should not form aesthetic judgements based on the testimony of others. My project asks: Is there an asymmetry between science and art when it comes to the possibilities of aesthetic knowledge via testimony?
